Andrew on a lone breakaway.

Andrew was a hotshot of the 80’s Victorian racing scene, starting as an 18 year old in 1983 with BCC at the sametime as his nemesis Scott Steward. The pair obliterating all the competition as they rose through the club ranks to A grade in less than a season. His first Open at Wandin saw him second to Scott (again!) in a B grade break that lasted most of the race and was promptly promoted to A grade where he stayed for his road career. Seen as a mountain goat climber and a hopeless sprinter he was always in big breaks hoping to finish solo which is probably what attracted him to MTB in the late 80’s where the racing was more “honest”. Highlights were a number of Open A wins including the 100km Victorian Amateur Title in 1988, and stage wins in the Tour of Canberra. In 1989 he represented Australia at the World MTB at Mammoth Mountain and was the first Australian home in 23rd despite a puncture in the first kilometer. In this time he also had many wins in local MTB racing with Fat Tyre Flyers.

Andrew just got bored with racing and took an extended break and returned when 40 to Masters racing where he has about 15 victories including two medals at the Australian Masters in 2005. He’s also learnt to sprint better so doesn’t have to win solo anymore!

Likes: Cervelo R3, freshly shaved legs (mine) and a good beer (James Squires)

Dislikes: Windy days, training in the heat and dickhead drivers & riders

Name – Andrew Meagher

D.O.B – 13/9/1993

Choice of ride – 2009 Ironhorse Sunday Worldcup

Bike riding started for me in year 8 were a few of my good friends brothers used to hit the trails every day after school, my mates and i decided to tag along and slowly i found my self getting better and better and deciding this was the sport for me. I got my first Downhill Bike in the christmas holidays of 2008. From there I found myself riding more and more Downhill and my love for bikes slowly growing.

I went on to do my first ever downhill race at Mt Buller Nationals 08/09 season. From there I finished what was left of the 08/09 Victorian Downhill series. This past year i competed in all rounds of the 09/10 Victorian downhill series and 09/10 National downhill series. In the past year my love for downhill has still persisted to grow yet my bike riding has branched off into other disciplines. Now racing Cross-Country and too be racing 4x in some of the coming rounds of the 10/11 National series.

I’m hoping to solidly improve this season and finish a top 10 in every race i participate in.
Wish Me Luck :D

D.O.B – 05/03/1994 (So I’m 16)

Choice of ride – 2010 Trek Session 88

During a day of filming

I’ve been riding a bicycle of some sort since i was around 3 i guess. I started racing the Victorian Downhill State Series in 2008 as an U17’s rider.

My first race I just wanted to qualify! Came down the hill and found myself sitting in 3rd place, this is when I knew it was the sport for me. I ended up crashing during my race run and finished up 6th but I was definitely here to stay.

I got my best result to date in round 2 at Barjarg and went on to finish 6thoverall for my first season of racing. The following year (2009/2010) I got a little to involved with the little bikes (BMX) and found myself in the same position as I did the year before, I finished 6th again.

Coming into this new season of downhill I have began to train 3 or 4 times a week and riding my downhill bike at least 2 days a week as wellas giving up all those good foods, such as Maccas! I will be Racing u19’s for next season and i will racing the Australian National Series next season and hoping to earn myself a spot in the Oceanias for 2011. Wish me luck :)

Veteran “Baby” Pete is the toughest nut of the squad. Before turning to cycling seriously Pete was a pretty good triathlete, back in the day when fluro lycra was the go. Raced on a U.S. road squad in California, and raced mountain bikes in the early days, he has plenty of cards up his sleeve. These days he is usually our designated sprinter, and has racked up a huge number of wins over the years. If he played football, you’d descibe him as a “nuggety ball-getter”! In 2006 he came very close to a world title at the veteran championships in Austria with a 4th place, but says he has plenty more years left to try again. Before that Pete has planned a return to triathlon by competing in the 2011 Australian Ironman.

Likes: Lead outs, Greek wrestling, ballet.

Dislikes: Losing to son Shaun.

Roy on the front pouring on the power!

One from the old school of “miles on the road” and “ more  miles on the road”, Roy has been a star of the team, regularly earning results over riders over 20 years his junior. Early in his cycling career Roy was a prominent rider and club champion of the then powerfull Blackburn cycling club. He took off to europe where he rode succesfully from 1984 to 1988 on the French Cyclosportif  Theon’ville team. After returning to Australia he raced for a while before hanging up the bike. His comeback started in 2003, and within a few years he was dominating masters and veteran road racing in the state, not to mention embarrasing plenty of much younger rivals in open events.

Likes: Belgium beer, headwinds, breaking away.

Dislikes: Undertraining, broken bones.

Glory days of the all-powerful Apollo team 1992

Team owner Mick Jamison has himself had a long and varied racing history. He started out racing road and track in the early 1980’s with Blackburn in its heyday,  then was lured by the fat wheels of the growing mountain bike scene. Mick  and brother Simon organized many MTB events into the 90’s, while racing in the prestigious AMBA XC national series in the APOLLO team, along with a young man by the name of  Cadel Evans. Mick ranked between 2nd and 5th nationally between ‘90 and ‘94 and represented Australia 3 times, priveliged to wear the national jersey and travel the world doing something he loves, while holding his own when time permitted on the road bike, racing in 3 Australian road championships. Needing a change of scene Mick made his way into the triathlon scene in the mid 90’s and demonstrated no swimming ability whatsoever! Still hopes to race the World duathlon championship in the next few years and crack the Aust title. Figures if he keeps racing long enough the rest of the competition will die from natural causes!

Likes:  Colorado,  choc muffins, smoking.

Dislikes: Redneck drivers, swimming, training with Matt Davis!

Dave Moreland – World Champion

World pursit championship

There is not enough space  here to do justice to Daves cycling achievments. A true gentleman on or off the bike, nevertheless his determination and grit have rewarded him with numerous results, perhaps crowned when he won gold at the Masters World Pursuit championship in 2008. Of course, being a teacher, Dave has loads of time off to train at taxpayers expense!

Likes: Apples computers, coffee shop rides, waxing intimate body parts.

Dislikes: Mountains, children, slowing down.

Best performances (here are just a few):

Masters world pursuit champion 2007

Tasmania track carnival winner

State masters road champion.

Blackburn Senior road and track champion

Matt Davis- Team Captain

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Fred Icke Memorial winner 2006

A nice bloke off the bike, but a real sadist when he gets in the saddle, Matt Davis was an obvious choice as our captain! His background as an elite level skier (Aust representative) has not only given him a fearless attitude on the bike, but also helped build some very strong legs.  One of our most prominent roadies in the teams early years, Matt spent some years as luitenant to Tom Leaper on the Brightstar team, his strong riding helping Tom to many victories, before returning to us in 2010.  After a series of crashes in the early season Matt is now in good form and will be looking to a strong showing in Melb to Warranambool.

Likes: Beer and breasts, preferably at the same time.

Dislikes: Wheelsuckers, gravel rash, rednecks, aphids

Best performances:  1st Fred Icke Memorial 2006

1st Tour of the Grampians 2006

3rd Macedon open teams race 2007
