I’ve been using the Silca Secret Chain blend and Super Secret drip wax system for a few months now and I can say that I am more than just impressed. Having a super quiet and continuously clean drive train is just one major benefit over all of the traditional lube systems I have used over many years. Silca advise that you hot melt wax the chain, then apply a thin coating of the Super Secret drip wax every 200-250km until you reach around 1600km then repeat the process again.
I’m using my commuter bike as the example here as it is the machine that cops all weather, and its been nasty the last month especially, but all of my bikes now use the Silca wax lube system. As you can see in the first few pics the condition of my drive train is still relatively clean, yet that is after 1600km of daily commuting in the foulest of weather. If you run your fingers trough the chain you may get a slight smudge that can be easily wiped off, not like the traditional black slimy grease that you need to scrub away at to remove.
Cleaning is extremely easy and environmentally friendly too, another bonus to this system. All I do when re-waxing is remove the chain and put it in a container with a very small amount of water based degreaser and some hot water, give it a shake and let it sit and then wipe the chain down. The same applies to the cassette if you wish to go the extra mile. Once the chain is clean and dry I then dip it into an old rice cooker, thanks wifey, and swish around for a few minutes before removing and letting the chain air dry, I’ve found this process somewhat mildly therapeutic
Once the chain has dried off you just need to loosen the chain links before placing back on the bike. After that you can enjoy a super clean and super quiet drive chain, see the last few photos for the finished product. Although the initial cost may seem high the long term cost is far outweighed by this lubing method. A bag of wax will wax close to 1000 chains and the drip wax will last around a year of regular use but the biggest saving is the longevity of your chain and cassettes. Research and testing has shown that a waxed system can deliver chain life in excess of 10,000km – I’m not kidding.
My only regret with this system is that I didn’t adopt it earlier!
