Knog Light Review – Jason Halls

Introducing the Knog PWR Mountain 2000 lumen light system

For a little while now I have had my eye on this offering from Knog. So when my current light set decided to give up the ghost, I decided there was no better time to grab one of these kits and give them a go!

Knog has created an entire eco system in the PWR range. The batteries are compatible with lights, camping lanterns, portable speakers, battery bank utilisation, head torch and handheld torch interchangeability options. It’s a great system design that can be used for night time adventures, commuting, bike packing trips and more. The bonus with bike packing trips is you can also add the solar panel system to the kit.  Just think, it will recharge while you ride during the day, topping up your battery banks and other devices. This way you have a lantern and sweet tunes when you get to your camping spot that night.

Anyway back to the PWR Mountain kit. This kit comes with a 2000 lumen light head that is fully customisable on the Knog Modemaker app. This capability in itself is a incredibly impressive tool, allowing you to select different flash and constant modes. You can even design your own mode.

Also supplied is their massive 10,000mAh battery, but more on that soon. It has an extension cable if you want to run the light head on your helmet or bars with the battery in another location. There are also other mounts supplied if you wish to just simply mount the whole system on your handlebars. I have been running the whole system on my handlebars for gravel rides but use the extension cable option for my commuter bike.

There is also a mount included to place the light head on your helmet.

Operation is so simple.  No buttons to worry about, especially when wearing gloves. To turn the light on simply twist the light head a quarter turn for 1 second to turn on or off.  To cycle through to  switch mode its the same quarter turn, but without the 1 second hold. This design is flawless and has a somewhat ASMR feeling to it, well for me at least hahahaha.

The construction is extremely impressive, the battery and light head casings are aluminium and feel very robust. They certainly feel like they will survive many, many years of night riding and camping without fuss. To separate the light head from the battery you simply depress the small push lock on the battery and pull apart.

When you have separated you will see three different ports. 1st is the port to operate the light, 2nd is a USB port to enable you to charge or operate any device that you can use a USB port on. The 3rd is the micro USB port for charging the battery.

For the battery, I have been more than impressed with its capacity and run times, in fact I’ve been blown away!

Knog claims that the battery will last 2 hrs on maximum, 2000 Lumen mode. I have tested this half a dozen times and like other reviews can confirm that the run time is much closer to 4 hours! In a gravel setting I usually run the light at about half the maximum output and am getting between 8-9hours of run time and when commuting closer to 10 hours as I run the light at around 800-900 lumens.

The performance of the light and beam pattern are very good. There is plenty of light to throw out that is very balanced. There is a good balance of light that floods the immediate area in front of the bars while also providing a good throw of spotlight further down the path. The colour of light is a crisp white that illuminates everything in your path. When using one of the many flash patterns to choose from I was very comfortable knowing that I could definitely been seen by other road uses in both daytime and night time settings.

This is the brightest 2000LM setting, it’s impressive along with its run time but best suited to tight twisty single track. This much light output is wasted on gravel and is way too bright to be used on roads.

This is the setting I mainly use for gravel riding, it’s 1100LM. I find this setting is a perfect balance of plenty of light and allowing for generous battery consumption

The Knog PWR Mountain light set is a truly wonderful package with very good value for money, the fact that it can be added to, customised and incorporated into a whole native system for epic adventures lasting days and weeks is why I am spruiking the brilliance of this light and system.

Cheers

Jason
