I have recently taken a job based close to the Snowy Mountains where
it is a wee bit cold to ride. I am used to Melbourne where we don’t get many mornings below 3 or 4 degrees. I have always had trouble with my hands getting cold despite trying many different gloves.
So when I knew I was going to be facing temps below zero I knew I would need more gear. Any excuse eh!
I went in to Croydon Cycleworks and asked Niko, what are the warmest gloves you have. He showed me the BBB Watershield gloves https://bbbcycling.com/au_en/bwg-29-watershield. I bought a pair and whilst I was at it, picked up a pair of winter tights https://bbbcycling.com/au_en/bbw-351-coldshield-bib-tights and a couple of pairs of the infra red socks Dillon was talking up weeks before https://bbbcycling.com/au_en/bso-16-firfeet
I have ridden with this stuff now in temps from +2 degrees and down to – 6 degrees and my take is as follows:
The BBB Gloves
The gloves are the best winter gloves I have ever had!
Hi Vis which goes nicely with the CCW Australia kit. They are warm and wind proof. Supposedly waterproof too but there’s a drought up here so haven’t tested that. They’re a little bulky but still work with a touchscreen which I think is amazing. Very comfortable and have a pretty high wrist coverage so you don’t have any gap issues. I found that they sweat a little but weren’t as bad as other gloves I have used. A little harder to get on if you take them off mid ride. For me, after about 30mins at -6 degrees my hands did start to get cold but to be honest it wasn’t very pleasant riding in those conditions anyway….
On that same ride I wore the tights and the socks too.
The BBB Tights
The tights are super comfy. I haven’t been hot or cold in them. An absolute must have for winter. I have ridden back in Melbourne on the weekends and been very disappointed that I haven’t had a pair at home to use. Absolutely love these.
The BBB Socks
And the socks…. it’s hard to get excited about socks….. but these things are amazing. I rode in -6 deg with no shoe covers and my feet were fine. They aren’t bulky at all either. Dillon was right, these things are amazing.
So paired with a reasonable jacket and a cycling beanie I have been able to keep riding despite the weather being way colder than what I am used to with help from some of the BBB winter gear.
I can highly recommend these items to add to your winter kit.
